City switches on households in Chris Hani and Tembisa, Samora Machel

The City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Energy and Climate Change, Councillor Phindile Maxiti and other dignitaries, on Monday, 17 May 2021, switched on the electricity to 40 households in the Chris Hani and Tembisa informal settlements in Samora Machel, Philippi. In City-supplied areas and on City-owned land, almost all informal settlements in the metro have been connected to electricity, where it has been possible to do so.

The City’s Electricity Generation and Distribution department spent more than R430 000 to connect the 40 households to the electricity grid in the Chris Hani and Tembisa communities. Councillor Maxiti was joined by residents and the leadership of Ward 33 and Subcouncil 23.
 
‘Over the past few months, the City has made great strides in connecting households to the electricity grid across the metro. The electrification project commenced in April this year and was completed on Friday, 14 May 2021. We are pleased that this project was completed ahead of schedule and will immediately improve the living conditions of our residents ahead of the coming winter months.
 
‘The City commends the staff in the Electricity Generation and Distribution Department for their hard work on the completed electrification projects as well as the numerous ongoing projects across the metro.  We will continue to make every effort to improve the lives of our residents.
 
‘We also remind residents to help us protect infrastructure by reporting electricity theft, vandalism and illegal connections to the City or to the South African Police Service. In City-supplied areas and on City-owned land, almost all informal settlements in the metro have been connected to electricity, where it has been possible to do so,’ said Councillor Maxiti.
